The Grade 5 & 9 ActivPass is valid through Aug 31!
What is the ActivPass?
The Grade 5 and 9 ActivPass gives students FREE access to recreation facilities at designated times.
From September through August, grade 5 and 9 students in public and private schools in the greater Kingston area can use their ActivPass. To access facilities, Grade 5 students show their physical activity pass, which they receive at school, and grade 9 students show their student identification card or an ActivPass, which can be picked up in their school office.
Students can enjoy activities such as swimming, ice skating, curling and use of gymnasiums or fitness centres at participating organizations.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why Grade 5’s for the ActivPass?
Grade 5 students have been chosen for a number of reasons. Research shows that physical activity begins to decrease in children as early as the age of 9 years. Children who are not active enough do not obtain the benefits associated with physical activity. For example, physical activity positively affects the growth and development of children. Physically active children are more likely to maintain a healthy body size and have lower risks of cardiovascular disease. Active children receive many benefits including improved self-esteem, mood, behaviour, and academic performance. Finally, Grade 5 students are at an age when they are independent but still enjoy family activities.
Why Grade 9’s for the ActivPass?
Grade 9 students have been chosen as they are at an age where they are establishing new habits. Research shows that physical activity levels begin to decrease as youth enter their high school years. Physically active youth are more likely to obtain the benefits associated with physical activity, including lower risks of cardiovascular disease, improved self-esteem, mood, behaviour, and academic performance. Furthermore, Grade 9 is the final year in Ontario that students are required to enrol in a physical education course, which means educators can encourage students to use the pass as a physical activity opportunity in the community.
Why not all grades?
Kingston Gets Active offers the pass to grades 5 and 9 for the reasons mentioned above. We appreciate and are grateful for our partners for the free services they offer. We don’t offer it to all grades mainly due to financial reasons. The partners offering free access to grade 5 & 9 students are unable to offer it to all grades without some sort of additional financial support.

More About the ActivPass
The ActivPass, spearheaded by Kingston Gets Active, aims to get students active by reducing transportation and financial barriers. The idea behind this free program is to provide children and youth with easy and accessible active opportunities so they can be active on a regular basis. Instead of sitting in front of the screens, kids have a healthier option to get them moving. Many thanks to our partners for helping to make this initiative possible.
