Active living in Kingston Ontario

Jane’s Walk Comes to Kingston

Kingston, get your walking gear out! This May, several neighbourhood associations and community groups are coming together to present a Jane’s Walk Weekend.  Jane Jacobs was an author and activist whose grassroots efforts stimulated residents’ interest in their own neighbourhoods and triggered a world-wide phenomenon of volunteer citizen-led tours.

Neighbourhood leaders are co-ordinating their efforts to offer a stimulating selection of tours on a variety of subjects throughout Kingston including the Memorial Centre grounds, north Bagot Street, the Inner Harbour, and Barriefield. The Ontario Public Interest Research Group will lead a walk focussed on the forgotten history of oppression and resistance.  The tour subjects are as varied as the locations.

“This is not just about historical walking tours, it’s a chance for people to find out some really quirky things about places they’ve seen all their lives or locations they never knew existed,” says John Grenville, of the Williamsville Community Association and Jane’s Walk Kingston co-ordinator. “It’s a tremendous opportunity for residents, and for our organizations to showcase where we live” he adds.

The Kingston tour descriptions can be found on the Jane’s Walk website under Kingston. The walks are free and will take place Saturday May 2 and Sunday May 3 morning and afternoon, rain or shine. You can take more than one and even arrange a walk in your neighbourhood, which undoubtedly has its own interesting stories to tell.
